Lyft is shutting down its California operations

Starting 11:59 PM PT on August 20, Lyft is shutting down its California rideshare operations. The move, likely temporary, was expected after a judge ordered the company (along with Uber) to treat its drivers as employees rather than independent contractors. Uber is expected to do the same. It marks a major milestone in the ongoing battle between rideshare companies and regulators who would see them expand benefits for their drivers, and is especially ironic considering both Lyft and Uber got their start in California. Lyft, making similar arguments to Uber, claims the move would “necessitate an overhaul of the entire business…

Call of Duty goes historical again with Black Ops: Cold War

Activision has been teasing the next Call of Duty game for a while, and now we finally know what it’s called and what it’s about. It’s all neatly summed up by the title: Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. No, I don’t know where the colons in that title go, either. That’s just my best guess. The company teased the game with a video titled “Know Your History,” which cribs footage of KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov discussing sleeper agents in Western intelligence. Google makes the Pixel Buds even better with EQ and smart features

Despite a few hiccups, Google’s Pixel Buds might just be my favorite true wireless earbuds on the market. But as with anything, they could be improved, and an update from Google today seeks to do just that. Google is adding a plethora of features to the Pixel Buds today that significantly expand their functionality. The most notable for many will likely be the new bass boost EQ, which should make the bass heads out there happy; this is accessible right from the device’s…

Finally, a dating app for Tesla owners and Elon Musk bootlickers⚡️

Dating apps like Tinder and Bumble are cool, but it can be tough to meet like-minded people — especially if all that’s on your mind is Tesla and Elon Musk. Unlike regular people who rarely care about philosophy, their carbon footprint, saving the planet, colonizing Mars, and naming their children after spy planes, Teslites and Muskians struggle to co-exist with non-Teslites and non-Muskians. In fact, research (citation non-existent) has shown that Tesla owners are 90% less likely to find love than any other earthlings. It’s a problem that’s plagued these poor souls for years. So I went on a date…

You can’t hire friends… or can you?

Boris is the wise ol’ CEO of TNW who writes a weekly column on everything about being an entrepreneur in tech — from managing stress to embracing awkwardness. You can get his musings straight to your inbox by signing up for his newsletter! As I wrote last week, I’ve made and currently have a lot of friends I met through my own company. It’s not like I only hired friends — which would be weird and, you know, nepotism — but to me, it feels logical that some of the people I hired eventually turned into friends. Once upon a…
